This article reviews the role of adenosine in modulating pain hyperexcitability as manifested in neuropathic pain. It synthesizes findings from 62 studies preclinical and human studies, highlighting how adenosine may reduce pain hyperexcitability, and how findings can be translated from animals to pain patients. The article supports the ongoing search for safe, targeted pain management therapies.
