Five-Year Prognosis After TIA and TGA Shows Differences in Cardiovascular Risk

In this MEDtalk, Tiina Komulanen, MD, PhD candidate, University of Eastern Finland, presents findings from an Eastern Finnish register-based cohort study on the five-year prognosis after transient ischemic attack (TIA) and transient global amnesia (TGA). Patients treated at the neurological emergency unit of Kuopio University Hospital in 2017 were followed using national health registries. The results show a high risk of stroke, recurrent TIA, and mortality among TIA patients, particularly in the early post-event period, while cardiovascular outcomes were rare among TGA patients. Compared with previous European studies, the prognosis after TIA appears poorer, raising important considerations regarding secondary prevention and the organization of TIA care, whereas outcomes after TGA remained favorable.
